Happy International Women's Day
This International Women’s Day, our lead planner Ruby Sohi shares her story about why she decided to work for herself and the challenges she faced as a new mom with a business.
When my first son was born, I realised that my career will never be the same again. Unfortunately the work-life balance of being a new mother and working full time, simply didn’t exist at the time. I felt like I had to choose between being a new mother and maintaining my career. The scary part is that I felt unsupported and believed this was ‘normal for women’ and that we simply need to ‘adjust’ when we choose to have a family.
So, I decided to work for myself because I needed the flexibility during this important life change. I knew it would not be an easy ride and that I was taking a huge risk, but I needed to try. It took courage, persistence and a strong belief in my own abilities and I am proud to have come this far.
While this path worked for me and my family, we need to do better to support working women with young kids. We shouldn’t have to choose between our career and raising a family. Today, it’s great to see more employers offering flexible work environments but we still have a long way to go. We deserve more and it’s time to change the narrative for our future female leaders.
